The BX has partnered with leading firms Everhart Advisors and Newport Retirement Services to create a 401(k) retirement savings program called a Multiple Employer Plan (MEP). The MEP arrangement allows BX members to join together to offer their employees access to a 401(k) plan while mitigating many of the challenges and administrative headaches. The MEP will allow you to save time, reduce costs, increase efficiencies, and limit liability.

Importantly, each BX member maintains the flexibility to customize the design of your 401(k) plan with the features that work best for your company, even with the ability to include prevailing wage contributions.  

Overview and Advantages of a MEP

 In the BX Multiple Employer Plan, The Builders Exchange of Central Ohio is the named Plan Sponsor and our members have the exclusive opportunity to become a “Participating Employer.” The MEP allows you to offload some of the burdens of managing a traditional 401(k)—daily operations, fiduciary risk and liabilities, and other obligations—so you can focus on what matters most for your business. And by joining together with other BX members, you can lower the expense of providing a 401(k) plan. 

Participating employers can take advantage of:

  • Cost Efficiencies – Costs are generally lower because they are spread across a larger participant and asset base reducing the costs for each BX member in the plan.
  • Fiduciary Risk Mitigation – Fiduciary investment duties are outsourced to the BX and Everhart Advisors, serving as an ERISA 3(38) investment fiduciary.
  • Operational Outsourcing – Newport serves as the 3(16) administrator and assumes most all of the plan’s operations on behalf of participating BX members, including the distribution of disclosures and notices to employees, tracking employee eligibility, along with approving loans, hardships and other plan disbursements.
  • Increased Focus – The participating BX member uses fewer resources allowing more focus on growing revenues and profits in their business.

Managed Care Organization

Both Managed Care Organizations (MCO) and Third Party Administrators (TPA) play important roles in helping employers manage workers’ compensation costs. If you are responsible for your workers’ comp program, it’s important to have a fundamental understanding of the roles of an MCO and a TPA.

  • What is an MCO?
    Under Ohio's Health Partnership Program, MCOs are responsible for the medical management of Ohio employers' work-related injuries and illnesses. Every employer in Ohio must have an MCO, which is paid for directly by the BWC.

  • What is a TPA?
    A Third Party Administrator (TPA) assists employers in the administrative and financial aspects of a claim. TPA staff typically consists of claim representatives, account representatives, and other workers' compensation professionals.

  • A Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA)
    A self-funded MEWA for BX members with 2 to 50 full-time eligible employees, powered by SOCA.

    The Builders Exchange of Central Ohio partnered with the Southern Ohio Chamber Alliance (SOCA) to offer small employers – those with 2 to 50 employees – access to a health insurance program called a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA). This allows members to pool together to create buying power in order to purchase more affordable health insurance as one large group.

  • The Alliance Saver Program
    Group health plan administered by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield for employers with 50 or more full-time eligible employees.

    For larger companies – those with 50 or more employees – the Alliance Saver Program can have a significant impact for employers offering health insurance benefits. The Alliance Saver Program allows for premium savings through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of 1%, but by adding ancillary programs such as dental, vision, life and disability options, members can potentially save up to 5%.
